What is Central Romana?
Central Romana Corporation is a sugar, agriculture, and tourism conglomerate based around the city of La Romana, in the eastern Dominican Republic. Its mill — founded in 1911–12 as an operation of the South Puerto Rico Sugar Company — is the largest sugar mill in the country, and by most measures the largest privately owned sugar-cane railway still running anywhere in the Americas.
Unlike almost every other cane railway of its era, Central Romana never converted its fields to truck haulage. Cane is still cut in the fields, hauled to trackside loading points by ox cart and tractor-trailer, hoisted onto rail wagons by gantry cranes, and moved to the mill entirely by rail — a supply chain essentially unchanged in its basic shape since the 1910s, even as the locomotives, the dispatching, and the ownership have all changed several times over.
